In 1996 the voters of Upper Makefield approved a $5.9 million bond issue to preserve open space. In June of 1998, Upper Makefield Township worked with Heritage Conservancy to produce the "Plan to Preserve Upper Makefield Township's Farmland & Open Space". The township's efforts resulted in it being awarded the "Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence" in 2001. After preserving a number of farms, it was determined that the initial funding would have to be supplemented to meet the township's open space goals. In 2000, another referendum, for an additional $15 million was approved.
Upper Makefield has made good progress in preserving its open space. Over the past decade, more than 1,500 acres has been preserved. The original plan had the following goals:
Over the past six years, Upper Makefield Township has been successful in implementing its open space plan following the "Action Steps to achieve objectives" in the 1998 plan.
